- Please join us for the re-dedication of the land and the blessing of the commencement of the restoration of the Chickees at Eckerd College.
Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 1 PM.
Fox Woods, behind the Fitness Center
Bobby Henry, Seminole Tribe Medicine Man, will lead us in the dedication and blessing of the restoration of the chickees (Seminole thatched structures) on campus. He also will lead us in traditional Seminole dancing. Refreshments will be served. Jim Billie and his crew will restore the chickees beginning on September 14 and continuing over a three-day period. Through the generosity of President Eastman the chickees, which were a gift of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and its Chairman James E. Billie in 1999, will be restored.
Chickee is the word Seminoles use for house. The chickee style of architecture, consisting of cypress log framing and palmetto thatch, originated in the early 1800s during the Seminole Wars and provided the Seminoles fast, temporary shelters. Chickees have since become an important part of the Seminole community and culture.
In 1999 the Seminole Tribe of Florida gave the structures to the College as part of the Discover Native America Festival of that year. In 1999 and in 2000 under the leadership of Jim Billie, Chairman of the tribe for 24 years, they gave the College a two-day festival featuring native artists, fancy dancing, and native entertainers on three stages. The chickees were the site of a living village featuring native folkways. A children’s village featured Indian song, dance, and storytelling.
Many thanks to Jim Billie, Bobby Henry, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida; to Jim Annarelli and Carolyn Johnston for their leadership in this project; to the Environmental Studies discipline for contributing funds for seating in the structures; and to the Eckerd Center for Spiritual Life--Campus Ministries, the 2009-10 ECOS officers, and the Class of 2008 for their gifts in support of the restoration.
Please join us for this important celebration of Seminole culture.
